Find An ACN: Litigation History Search

Due diligence as a consumer can be confusing and time-consuming.

Court histories are an excellent way to take your first step. Did you know that for a number of courts, just to see if a company has ever been sued, you have to manually apply to each individual court and pay all those fees? And that’s before you even apply for information about what the case was about.

When making decisions, it can be a wise strategy to understand what is going on behind the scenes. A contractor you want to hire might have a long history of clients suing them, which could cause you to consider other options. It’s possible a franchise you wish to buy has recently been sued in a court case. There could be any number of issues which are buried in court documents that you would never know if it hasn’t been reported on in the media, or had regulatory action taken. Many people say, “if only I had known beforehand, I would have gone elsewhere”. This is your opportunity to know.

Litigation history searches help you determine whether you wish to look further and apply to the courts for more information about a court case, or whether you are comfortable with what the results show. It helps you understand a risk better, potentially saving you money, stress, and time down the track.

So how do you get started?

First of all, you need the Australian Company Number (ACN) of the entity you want to search.

To find the ACN, head to ASIC’s website.

It should look like this:

Look up a company ACN with ASIC

From here, navigate to where it says “Search ASIC Registers”. You want to select “Organisation & Business Names” and where it says “For”, type in the company’s name you want to search.

Once you’ve typed in the name, click “Go”.

The ACN will be in the section under ‘Number’.

This is a company’s ACN. This number is what you need to enter into our software when performing a Litigation History Search.
